I love to read. I can’t imagine settling into bed at night without a book in my hand. And I do mean an actual book. I may be one of the last people on earth to say this, but I’ve never read an entire book on a digital device. It may seem old-fashioned, but I just can’t seem to make the switch. I love to read books across different genres. A well written memoir, international fiction or historical novels, I love variety. But, like my favorite series to stream, mysteries and thrillers are what I return to time and again. It would be hard to count the number of books I’ve read by Elizabeth George, Louise Penny, Peter May, Ann Cleeves, Elly Griffiths… you get the idea. And if you’re like me, you’re always looking out for recommendations of new authors to read.
Where has Karin Slaughter been all my life?
Somehow, until earlier this year I had never heard of Karin Slaughter. Thankfully, I came across her 2017 stand-alone novel, The Good Daughter. What a great read. I looked to into other books she’s written. Needless to say, she’s written a lot. Where has Karin Slaughter been all my life? She has two very popular series, Grant County and Will Trent, along with several standalone novels. I ordered the first book in her Will Trent series, Triptych, it had great reviews. It seemed like a perfect read for our upcoming family beach vacation. And so it was. I sat in my lounge chair under our amazing beach umbrella and finished it in a couple of days.
The series title character is Will Trent, an officer with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and is set primarily in Atlanta, GA. Trent is a young, handsome, brilliant investigator, but a damaged man with a tragic past. He reminds me of the character Endeavor Morse from the Endeavor TV series. I just want to scoop these two men up, bring them to my house, fix them a nice, warm, home-cooked meal, pat them on the back and tell them everything will be okay.
Important News!
That was June, it’s now mid October and I’m still reading Karin Slaughter. I’m hooked, I just can’t stop. I read the first two books in her Will Trent series. And with a stroke of luck, while I was browsing on Amazon, intending to order the third book, I saw a reviewer explain that before reading the third Will Trent installment, you may want to read the six books from her Grant County series. The main characters from that series end up being introduced to the characters from her Will Trent series in the third book, Undone. This was important news!
So, I began on her Grant County series. And I read all six in a row. These novels take place in fictional Grant County, Georgia. The main characters include the local coroner/pediatrician, Sara Linton and her ex-husband, the police chief Jeffrey Tolliver. I have to say, some of these novels are dark and a little gruesome (reminiscent of Patricia Cornwell). I thought of taking a break at one point, but, I didn’t. I just kept going back for more. With a good series, you get so invested in the characters. Picking up the latest installment is like catching up with an old friend. And in this case, if your friend is a coroner or involved with investigating murder it can be quite a thrilling visit.
a Fun Ride
Last night, I finished the 5th book in her Will Trent series, Fallen. It’s a fabulous, well-written, page-turning series. I didn’t let myself order the next one, I really need to take a break. Read something completely different for a bit, right? But now, I’m a little sad that I don’t have the next one on hand. I know I will finish all her books in the near future. And, maybe it’s time to move on, but it has been a fun ride.
