Houseplants are the perfect home accessory to add warmth, texture and interest to any space. The right plant in the right spot can brighten up a whole room. Not only are they a great way to liven up a space, but they are easy on the budget, as well. And there are many beautiful houseplants that don’t need too much attention and really are easy to care for.
There are houseplants that are beautiful and easy to care for.
Trendy Does Not Equal Easy Care
You can’t open a home decor magazine or go on Instagram these days without seeing gorgeous photos of houseplants. It seems like you see the same ones over and over, doesn’t it? Some plants have become trendy because they photograph so well. However, that doesn’t mean they are easy to keep alive and care for. Believe me, I’ve killed a few plants in my day. But, I finally figured out that it wasn’t that I couldn’t care for plants, it was just that I hadn’t been making good choices in the types of plants I bought.
If you’re looking for a plant that’s easy to keep alive, you want to look for plants that can thrive in rooms with varying amounts of light. Also, look for ones that aren’t too fussy about needing misting or fertilizing and ones that are disease resistant. There are some tried and true plant varieties that I find not only easy to care for but truly beautiful.
My Favorites
Here are my favorite easy care houseplants and a few notes about each:
- Green Heartleaf Philodendron. This may be the one you think of when you hear the word philodendron. Rich, green heart-shaped leaves. Great trailing variety you could use on a higher surface or in a hanging container. (photo – Kevin Lessy on Unsplash)
- Micans Philodendron. I love this plant. I have one on my mantle. Beautiful deep green leaves with a velvety, satin-like texture. New growth and the underside of leaves can sometimes have a deep red or russet color. Beautiful trailing plant.
- Brasil Philodendron. This one is all about the color. Bright green variegation on the leaves makes this one stand out.
- Neon Pothos. This is the plant you want if you have a corner of a room that feels a little dim or blah. The gorgeous bright chartreuse green of the leaves on this one will perk up any area. I have two of these. (photo – Khanh Nguyen from Pexels)
- ZZ Plant. I love this plant. I love the way it looks and it’s different from the pothos and philodendron in that it’s a vertical grower. A large one looks great in a big floor pot but I’ve had one in a pot on a table as well. Doesn’t need much watering. (photo Natalia Strakhoniuk from Pexels)
- Snake Plant. Another tall plant. Can be slow growing but very forgiving in terms of light and general attention it needs. Likes very little watering. (photo – Fabian Stroobants from Pexels)
I think one of the most common mistakes people make with houseplants is overwatering. Just make sure you let your plants dry out a little between waterings. Luckily, I have a great local garden center that carries a fantastic selection of houseplants and hopefully you do, too. Happy potting!
